The “Herring Shed” (with tools and workbench) for sails, equipment and ice. Shared bicycles. Dinghy racks. Literally, in the town of Bayfield, WI. Adjacent to the Brownstone Trail for hiking and biking. The season is normally from the first days of May until mid-October. We have approximately forty-five members.
History
Founded in 1955 when three friends (Oscar Sweeny, Dr. John Pierpont, and Bill Peet) formed the club to promote sailing and racing on Lake Superior. AIYC has always been a family club; many of us have belonged for generations. Originally called “Bayfield Yachts,” the club eventually grew large enough to purchase the point of land called Dock 8. Dock 8 had been a lumber mill and fish cleaning station for the local commercial fishing fleet. AIYC has had many improvements over the years. A seawall was built in 2009. Most recently, the clubhouse was completely rebuilt in 2017.
Organization
Apostle Islands Yacht Club is not a marina—we are a private club owned and operated by its members. We like to keep our organization simple and affordable. This requires all members to help manage, repair, and improve our club and its facilities. The Apostle Islands Yacht Club is managed by a board of directors elected by members for two-year terms. The board meets throughout the year (generally in the Twin Cities) to help ensure that all members can enjoy the benefits of our club long into the future.
Costs
Our club offers the greatest value in the entire region. Annual ownership costs for a 32 foot boat are about $3500 each year. Calculate updated costs from the club's standing resolutions available on the resources page.
